The knowledge that local libraries and County Records Offices contain vast amounts of freely accessible genealogy information has helped. Above all, the internet and in particular by the expansion of companies such as Ancestry.com that provide access to billions of genealogically-related data have encouraged many to believe they can unravel their family tree.

The well-qualified and well-intentioned staff employed by our libraries and Record Offices should be able to help but invariably they don’t have the time to give you the individual attention you require. Most often they’ll just point to a row of cabinets containing boxes of microfilms. More persistent enquirers will often be reminded that they can carry out research for them, or have an approved list of outside researchers who can, at a fee of around £ 20 an hour !! Top
