In December 2007, some of the UK's most sensitive military sites suddenly became available for the first time in glorious high resolution detail on aerial photography, courtesy of Getmapping. Ever since Getmapping first launched its imagery in 1999, the area in question has only been covered in low resolution, leading to suggestions of "censorship". Throughout 2007, Google Earth featured medium resolution imagery – but only of partial coverage and much of it was marred by cloud cover. The Royal Naval Armaments Depot, RNAD Coulport and Her Majesty's Naval Base, HMNB Clyde at Faslane can now be examined in minute detail by using Microsoft Virtual Earth (below) to zoom in close-up to Getmapping's new perfectly clear data! Feast your eyes on the Trident Missile nuclear warhead storage bunkers, the submarine weapons loading jetty, missile re-entry body storage and processing buildings, NATO fuel depots and much more!
It shows in incredible detail the special double ring-fenced compound (right) comprising gravel-filled mounds to contain a plutonium release in the event of an accidental detonation of the conventional warhead explosive components. |
