A meandering route across Northumberland, starting in the Tyne Valley passing the finest remains of Hadrian's Wall, and then heading north-west to Rothbury, over the Cheviots to Wooler, and finishing with the coast path from Budle Bay to Alnmouth. Despite there being a clear route along existing footpaths on the map, there is often very little on the ground and the terrain can make the walking very slow and tiring. At one point near Housesteads Roman Fort there is no actual right of way (as shown in the guidebook) and the wrath of the owner has to be faced. This is a very physical, hard walk over rough terrain that is very difficult to navigate, so a GPS is essential!

Guidebook: The Reivers Way by James Roberts (Cicerone Press). This book is to be used with extreme caution as it uses a path with no right of way (Elsdon to Wark section). It suggests that the owner's permission should be sought, but when we did they said no! Cicerone Press say that they have had no other complaints in 5 years.
