East Anglian League 1st Meeting 18th April 2004 at Luton.

The first EAL meeting of the year was held at Luton in possibly the worst conditions possible. Despite the wind and rain, there were some fantastic individual performances, and a very encouraging overall 2nd place. Congratulations to the U15 girls and Senior Men who won their groups.

As it was the first team meeting of the newly formed club, many new club records fell. There was also a very impressive League record in the SM 110m Hurdles of 14.9 by Gary Smith.

In the U13 girls, just 2 athletes Rosie Keane and Molly Kenneally managed 4th overall on their own by each doing 3 events. Just shows how filling the events can boost the points total.

In the U15 girls, Monica Bramwell won an impressive 4 events, including the relay and a creditable 13.0s in the 100 in horrible conditions. Stephanie Chevalier also won the Long Jump A. Again, good turnout in all events proved how points add up. Well done to Megan Birdsey and Stephanie for doing their 3 events.

The Senior Women’s group is now combined with the U17 and Junior Women. A very good 2nd place was helped by good wins for Wendy Lidyatt (Hurdles) Jade Christie and Amy Jankiewitz (Long Jump) S Conway (200m B) Suzanna Wise (Shot B) and the relay team.

The U13 boys highlights were wins by Isaac Rasmussen and Aaron Bulmer in the shot and the relay team.

The U15 boys had wins for Perry Howarth (1500m) in a very good 4m 34.8s, Paul Batchini (1500m B) Colin Johnson (Long Jump B) Stuart Baird (Discus B) and Terry Patterson (Shot) with an excellent 10.51m.

The U17 men winners were Matt Sutton (800m and Javelin) Joe Steele (Long and Triple Jumps) Tom Pool (Triple Jump B) and the relay team.

The Senior Men won their group with a huge 162 points. The winners were James Drinkwater (3000m B) Gary Smith (110m Hurdles) David Hughes (Long and Triple Jump) Aaron Waterfield (Triple Jump B) Ollie Sweeney (High Jump) Steve Whyte (Hammer, Shot and Discus) Geoff Grinstead (Shot B) Mike Butler (Javelin and Discus B) Dave Burrell (Hammer B and Javelin B). A clean sweep in the throwing events. One of the races of the meeting was the last relay, which took place in driving rain and fierce winds. The SM and U17 teams ran together. The last leg saw the SM with a 15-20m lead and we held our breath as Andrew Gough cut the lead in chunks, but failed to catch Peter Benedickter, who held on to win by just a couple of meters in an event very alien to him.

Well done to everyone who turned out on a horrible day, especially the judges and timekeepers, and other officials. Thanks also go to the canteen staff who do a great job at every home meeting and rarely get a mention.!
