405 Petrol Engines Page
The Peugeot 405 Petrol engines can be separated into two categories, these being early engines (pre Oct 1992) and late engines from then onwards. This means that all series II and III cars mentioned in the saloon and estate pages have the later design engines. All post Oct 92 cars with the later engines are fitted with catalytic converters, which is effectively why the engine range was revamped - because of emission regulations. The following two sections split these groups and explain in more detail the engine ranges available.
Series I 405 petrol engines (pre Oct 92)
The range of engines first available at the launch of the 405 and up to October 92 (K reg) consisted of the following:-
1.6 Carb 92BHP
1.9 Carb 110BHP
1.9i Fuel Injected 125BHP
1.9i 16v Fuel Injected 160BHP (as fitted to the Mi16)
For details of which engine options came with what model, please refer to my petrol saloon and estate pages. Generally the best engine out of this bunch was the 1.9i 125BHP engine as fitted to the GTXi petrol pre Oct 92. The 16 valve engine was only fitted to the Mi16, and is therefore the most rare engine block out of this batch. The most noticeable problem which has been experienced with these engines is the valve guides which wear quite badly. Symptoms of this is blue smoke on start up, and oil consumption generally. It has been mainly put down to unleaded petrol, of which the engines were not designed for, but could be tuned for running on. Pinking is also quite common with these engines especially the carburettor fed 1.6 and 1.9 engines. Also, the carburettors themselves are also troublesome, symptoms being hesitance and flat spots when accelerating. Most of these problems can be fixed by an overhaul of the carb, and quite often is caused by pitted ball bearing in the flow chambers - cheap to fix if you know how! Performance figures are listed below with expected fuel economy as well. My thanks to those of you that have contributed to these tables!
For more info on Carburettors, visit the Peugeot Spares page from the main menu
Note all 405 Petrol engines can run on Unleaded Petrol if tuned.

Series II & III 405 petrol engines (Oct 92 onwards)
Following the major facelift of October 1992, the 405 Petrol engine range changed completely. All engines were now fuel injected and fitted with catalytic converters. Out went the 1.9 engine which was replaced with a more modern 2.0 block. The 1.6 engine was replaced by a similar unit, and in addition a 1.4i and 1.8i engine was also added to the line up. The Mi16 1.9 16v engine was also replaced by a 2.0i 16v. The choice of engines fitted to these cars is as follows:-
1.4i / 75Bhp (Only made from Oct 92 - Aug 93)
1.6i / 90Bhp
1.8i / 103Bhp
2.0i / 123Bhp
2.0i 16v / 155Bhp (fitted to Mi16 and Le Mans)
The 1.4i engine was only produced for about a year and was not a good seller. The 1.4i engine itself (TU3 engine) is actually a very good one (as found in the 106, 205, 306 etc), but in the 405 it was somewhat under powered. The 1.6i and 1.8i engines are the most common, but there are a good number of 2.0i cars around - see the petrol saloon / estate pages for details of model / engine options. The 2.0i is the best out of the bunch as it produces a favourable MPG/performance compromise over the 1.6i/1.8i cars. There are no obvious problem areas to point out on any of these engines, but they do have a tendency to use oil with high mileage. The following table shows more detail on performance statistics:-
| Engine Code / Type | BHP / RPM | Lb/Feet / RPM | MPH /1000rpm in top | Top Speed | 0-62 | 30-50 | MPG |
| 1.4i (1360cc) TU3 | 75/ 5500 | 83 / 3400 | ? mph /1000revs | 100mph | 16.5 | ? | 40 * |
| 1.6i (1580cc) | 90/ ? | 98 / 3000 | ? mph /1000revs | 107mph | 14.1 | ? | 34 * |
| 1.8i (1761cc) | 103/6000 | 112/3000 | ? mph /1000revs | 112mph | 12.4 | ? | 37 * |
| 2.0i (1998cc) | 123/5750 | 132 /2750 | ? mph /1000revs | 119mph | 11.8 | ? | 35 * |
| 2.0i 16 Valve (1998cc) | 155/6500 | 137 /3500 | ? mph /1000revs | 133 mph | 9.8 | ? | 30 * |
* MPG figures are Estate 'mixture' journey figures.
405 T16 Model

The T16 model was not available in the UK, although at least 6 are now in the UK. The T16 looks very similar to the Mi16. The table below lists the probable 'standard' engine performance figures:-
| Engine Code / Type | BHP/RPM | Lb/Feet / RPM | MPH/1000rpm in top gear | Top Speed | 0-62 | 30-50 | MPG |
| 2.0i 16 Valve Turbo. 405 T16 | 196/5-6500 | 216/2600-4500 | ? mph /1000revs | 153 mph | 7.1 | ? | irrelevant ! |
The figures above are unlikely to represent many T16's, as they are all liable to be different! See the dedicated T16 page for more on these cars
Following on from my original idea of gathering a list of current T16 owners, which ended up with twenty or so T16 owners being in contact by email, the T16 owners now have their own websites for online exchange of information pictures and more. If you are a T16 owner, or have a Peugeot powered by a T16 engine, you can apply to join the 'T16 club'.
To visit the T16 club and to ask to join, go to www.yahoo.com , visit the 'groups' homepage, search for '405T16' where you will find the group. You have to ask to join as this allows the group to decide if you should be allowed to join - it is for T16 owners only remember, not just for 405 owners of any model.
