This is a record of my fishing experiences and catches, mainly around the Portland and Dorset (UK) coast.

Overcast, light NW, slight swell increase to moderate

5 small whiting, 1 pout

1 whiting on mackerel all other fish on ragworm

Saturday 18/1/03

3.00pm-6.30pm

Low 6.30 springs

Rain and drizzle, F5-6 SE, slight swell increasing to heavy

1 rockling

Squid

Paternoster pennel 4/0

Miserable conditions, swirling winds, baits and hooks taken.  Gave up.

Friday 24/1/03

2.45pm-midnight

Low 5.30 high 11.00

mid tides

Some clear spells, F3-4 SW, light-moderate swell

2 spotted rays both 3 1/2 lb, both male (same fish?), 2 bass 1-1/4 & 1-3/4lb, 1 pout, 2 fiddler crabs

Ragworm, mackerel fillets (1 ray on mackerel, all other fish on ragworm)

Running ledger 1, paternoster pennel 4/0

Ideal conditions, no fish in daylight (probably due to seal swimming around in cove).  All fish in 3 hours from 6pm. All fish at long range, nothing close in.  Crabs became a problem later.

Low 7.00 mid tides

Cloud clearing, F3-4 SW, light-moderate swell going down to light

1 sole 1lb 9oz,

1 pout

Virtually all baits came back intact except for the 2 fish.  Adz had a pout.

Mostly cloudy with some rain, F5-6SW, light-moderate swell increasing with the tide to very heavy swell

1 very small poor cod

All baits came back untouched until just after high tide when started to get few small bites.

Clear, F2-3 NNE, light/moderate swell going to light/moderate chop

1 small plaice, 3 small pollack (all about 1/2lb), 2 sea scorpions

Running Ledger size 1

 

Paternoster pennel 4/0

Plaice and  pollack on 1st and 2nd casts.  All others just after low tide

One pollack on mackerel, all others on ragworm.

Overcast, rain, drizzle and fog, F4 E going to still, moderate to heavy chop with big swells

2 small pout, 1 pollack (1/2lb), 1 bass (1lb)

Paternoster 2/0

All fish in 1st 2 hours (over high water), no bites after.  Bass on paternoster.

Saturday 8/3/03

Low 4.30, high 10.30 (neaps)

Overcast, F5-6 SW, moderate swell increasing to heavy

1 bass (1lb), 2 pout

Ragworm, mackerel and whole pout

Running ledger size 1 & 2/0, paternoster pennel 4/0

Bass 1st cast, pout about 7pm.  Huge bite at about 9.00pm (ragworm).

Wednesday 19/3/03

6.15pm-11.30pm

High 8.00 (springs)

Clear, calm, still

2 bass (1lb and 1-1/2lb)

Running ledger 2/0

Missed 4 other bass bites (1 very strong).  All on lugworm. Casting towards Bingcleaves found cleaner sand and fish.  Not too many crabs. All takes 8-10pm when tide started to drop.

Low 5.50, high 10.30 (springs)

Clear, F5-6 E (swirling around headland) going down to F2-3 E, light swell

1 pollack (1lb), few pout, 1 miniscule wrasse

Running ledger 2/0, paternoster pennel 4/0

Swirling winds made bite detection difficult to start.  Huge bite about 8pm , took hook.

Clear, F3 SSW going to calm, light chop

1 30cm plaice, 1 40cm (only 1lb 5oz, very lean) bass, 1 dogfish, 1 pout

Sandeel

3 hook flapper with & without beads, running ledger size 1 and 1/0

Plaice at about 6 o'clock on 3 hook flapper with beads (middle hook), no other bites 'til 10 o'clock.  All fish on ragworm, good bite lost on sandeel.

High 9.50, (springs)

Ideal, light/mod swell, F4-5SW going down to F1-2, mostly clear.

3 bass (34, 36 & 44cm (2lb3oz), 2 dogfish, 2 pout, 1 edible crab

Ragworm

3 hook flapper size 1 (with beads), running ledger 2/0

2 bass on different rods (one on 3 hook flapper with beads) at 7.30.  3rd bass at 9.30.  Crabs became a problem later.

High 8.45 (neaps)

F4-5 SW, mostly clear,  good chop/surf, some weed in the water

1 tiny smoothhound (only one other fish caught, a pout by Mr Bass)

3 hook flapper (before dark), simple paternoster 2/0 after dark

Smoothhound on ragworm.  Should have been some bass around, but there wasn’t.

High 9.30 (springs)

F5-6SW, overcast, calm (off shore)

3 bass to 30cm, 3 silver eels (1 about 1m and 2-1/2lb

Ragworm (self dug for the 1st time in years!)

3 hook flapper with beads, running ledger 1/0

Bass on 1st 3 casts on running ledger, no takers on 3 hook flapper.  Silver eels after high tide (2 on 1 hook).  Not too many crabs.

F3-4NW, clear, slight swell

1 wrasse (1lb), 1 spider crab, 8 dogfish

3 hook flapper with beads (no fish), running ledger size 1

Only wrasse & crab in daylight, dogfish on every cast after dark.  Gave up!

Still, slight swell, clear

1 wrasse (1lb), 1 spider crab, 1 red mullet (1/2lb), 1 mackerel, 8 dogfish

Paternoster pennel

Dogfish every cast again after dark.  Crabs took lots of hooks.  1st mackerel at Church Ope for a long time, must try feathers sometime.

Light + variable winds,  partial cloud, moderate swell going to light/moderate (ideal conditions)

1 Red mullet (1lb), 2 small starry smoothounds, + a few pout

All fish on ragworm between 8.30 (dusk) and 10.  No takers on mackerel

Weed became a problem when the tide started running.  Dab Hand fished too, with sandeel and squid, no takers.

Clear, light E-SE, very light chop

10 bass to 2lb10oz, 2 small starry smoothounds, 1 small wrasse

Weed was a problem for about an hour when tide started coming in.  Largest bass at 8.30, all other bass throughout session

Cloudy and misty becoming clear, light & variable winds, slight swell becoming moderate

1 sml wrasse, 1 sml sole, 1 small red gurnard, 1 small poor cod

Disappointing with few small fish, all just after low tide.  Fished with Dab hand who was using sandeel but no bites

Mostly clear, light + variable winds, almost calm. Calm weather for the last few weeks

1 mackerel, 2 very small pout

Ragworm, mackerel fillets and large sandeels

Running ledger  size 1,

Paternoster pennel 4/0

Disappointing sessions.  Mackerel took whole large sandeel on pop-up.  Lost good fish, probably bass, on ragworm well before dark.  Fished with Bob + Hard, just a couple of sml wrasse before dark.

Dogfish on all baits, whiting on Squid, poor cod on ragworm

Overcast, light NW, light/mod swell

Small plaice, pout x 2, whiting, dogfish

Squid, mackerel, lugworm

Paternoster pennel 4/0, paternoster 2/0

Plaice on whole squid, pout on lugworm, whiting, dogfish and pout on squid.
