Privilege? What Privilege?
It was recently proposed that members of the European parliamentary apparatus be given Diplomatic Immunity. A reasonable request, except that this came as an order from Brussels, so, as usual, was rubber-stamped through the House of Commons.
The problem is that this came with extras. Not only are those who work for the European Parliament immune from prosecution for anything, but so are their family members.
Now I have no idea whether this is standard for Diplomatic Corps, but would YOU really want the offspring of some jumped-up civil servant getting off a criminal offence simply because Daddy works for Brussels? It's bad enough when our royal family members do it.
However, It's worse than that, because this law doesn't say where the family ends. And it was delightfully obscure about exactly who had Carte Blanche to commit whatever crimes they like throughout Europe.
So our trusty eurosceptics in the House of Lords were left to do the digging. Glad to see somebody is working in Whitehall.
