WALKING THE DOG
Amos 3:3 (King
James Version)
'Can
two walk together, except they be agreed?'
Walking the dog can be a most pleasant
experience when both master or
mistress and pet are most agreeable to one another. It becomes an open
display of the friendship that has developed in private between them.
In such a healthy relationship, the dog is gladly under authority and
diligently exercises its authority over all that belongs to its master
or mistress,by guarding such with its very life. The dog delights in
its freedom with its owner but not in freedom from the latter. It
always hears and knows the voice of the owner from that of any stranger!
Yet there is a far greater experience that is
available for anyone who
travels on the road to the fulfillment of divine destiny:walking with
God! It is accessed by anyone who is a new creature in Christ
Jesus(2Cor. 5:17). This new creature is born of the Spirit(John 3:6b)
therefore it is spirit just like God is a Spirit(John 4:24). Walking
with God is the walk in the Spirit(Gal.5:25),a walk in which one
walks by faith(2 Cor.5:7). It is a walk in which the child of God
enjoys his or her freedom in Christ which being under the Lord's
authority(Matt.8:9)!
What a walk in which one delights to hear and obey
God's voice(John 10:3-5) instead of that of 'the
stranger' who comes to steal,to kill,and to destroy(John 10:10a)!
'The stranger' is the enemy of divine
destiny who seeks to sabotage one's walk with God. One exercises one's
authority over this enemy(Luke 10:19) as one is in submission to the
Lord(James 4:7).
This walk is the best kind of friendship one can enjoy on earth(John
15:15) and it is based on God's
goodness, mercy, and love. It involves a readiness to lay down one's life
for the brethren(1 John 3:16) who are one's fellow pilgrims, members of
God's family. It is a daily delight rather than a religious and
burdensome duty! One is not walking with God so as to earn his love and
mercy because one has already obtained mercy through Christ(1 Peter
2:10).
God in his great love offers this walk to everyone on the condition
that each one believes on the Lord Jesus Christ as one's personal Lord
and Saviour:
John 15:13
(King James
Version)
'Greater
love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
friends.'
1 Cor.1:9(King James
Version)
'God is faithful, by whom ye were called
unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.'
If ever this walk gets disrupted by one yielding to
one's lust which is
an ally of 'the stranger'(James 1:14),restoration of this walk is
available(1 John 1:9;2:1-2)!
Oh what a privilege to walk with the only One who desires to give one
an expected end(Jer.29:11) even if one has had a disastrous past!!!
