SPORT

EXIT

Within the index, it is easy to find out

Imagine the glee with which the setter here used “out” as a definition, knowing that it would send the incautious victim on an extended and fruitless search for an anagram! The whole clue apparently makes good sense, which can be very distracting in itself. The grammatical identity of “out” as a noun here is neatly concealed by making it look like the adverbial part of a compound verb “to find out”. Finally the comma inserted within the gap between the two components of the answer makes this a particularly nice example.

SOUND

So undignified a noise inside!

HATTER

What terminus holds the dormouse’s friend?

SCREAM

Howl in lugubrious cream

EUREKA

Discovery cry held back by Drake, ruefully (6)

Bit of an oddity that, because the hidden word is hidden backwards! (“Held back”.)
