Moria
Moria was a classic game that seems to have been around for ever.
I have come across 3 versions worthy of mention, but there are probably more out there.
NB - SEE ANGBAND , THE UPDATED VERSION OF MORIA.
This is such a classic dungeon and dragons game. If you have not already done so then you must try this game. It takes a while to learn the controls, but it is worth it. The graphics are simple - in fact they are just text characters - but that is part of the fun. This game has been around since the dawn of the computer I expect - I first found this game on a mainframe in 1988, and it blew me away. Then in 1992 I played a version for the Amiga computer which had redefined-text as graphics - it looked good but was essentially the same game.
Unzip it, then run UMORIA.EXE. Set up your character and you should be in the town...
1,2,3,4,5,6 are the shops. > is the way down into the first level of the dungeons. @ is you. You move around using the numeric keypad (if it says "TUNNEL THROUGH WHAT?" then you must press the NUM-LOCK key). Go to the shops to buy goods (sword, armour, food, lantern etc) , then go to the entrance to the dungeon and press ">".
Don't forget to wield a light of some sort or else you will get lost down there - Press "w" for wear/wield and press * to get a list of all the items you can use, then choose the light. You should also wear/wield any armour and weapon you have.
Press "i" to see what you are carrying .
When you need more help press "?"
TIP: Hold SHIFT when you move to automatically go in that direction until you encounter something.
When you wish to finish you should press CTRL-X - this is the only way of saving the game.
The beauty of this game is - when you are dead you are dead.
This is the updated version of Moria and it is highly recommended.
download Angband for Windows : Angband-305.exe
Go to www.thangorodrim.net for information and to find the latest version
Thanks to Billy for telling me about this new version.
One thing, I realised that you no longer see the arrows flying and gas clouds. YOU NEED THIS. I asked on the newsgroup and they said that it is because computers are too fast these days. You have to add a delay - you have to press "=D" - this chooses the "BASE DELAY FACTOR" which is set to 0 but can go up to 10. Setting it to 6 appear to work nicely on my old 733 mhz pc. If you have a new 3ghz machine then I guess you could set it higher.
WARNING - THIS GAME IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE
This is another version of Moria. Personally it's a bit too open ended for me, I like the original structure of seeing how deep you can get in one dungeon.
If you like the Moria/Angband sort of game but want more of a challenge, then you are going to love TOME . It is a version of Angband that has been changed to be more like Lord of the Rings, and it includes missions and quests, and more characters from the book.

Here I have selected New Tile and Big Tile mode and changed the font size.
I suggest you press =D in the game and set a delay so that you can see arrows flying.
TIP : Make a copy of the SAVE folder so that you can restore it if you die.
Download TOME here. (or go to the TOME homepage to read about it or see if there is newer version)
