[Scene: Taxi pulls up outside Alice's block of flats. Alice pays the driver and Nick
and her get out. We then see inside her flat. It's spacious and neat and off white in colour. Nick is pacing around the flat looking at his hands trying to work out what happened to him.] |
|
|
| Alice: |
How d'you take your coffee? |
| Nick: |
White, please, no sugar. |
| Alice: |
Tell me more about this place, the Institute. |
| Nick: |
I've told you everything I know. It's a couple of hours away. (Nick
looks into a mirror) |
| Alice: |
Your still there. |
| Nick: |
If it happens again... |
| Alice: |
(interrupting) I'll let you know. (walks into next room). You've no idea
where? |
| Nick: |
The windows on the van were blacked out it was in the country , felt like
we were travelling north. |
| Alice: |
You must have seen something while you were there. |
| Nick: |
Yeah? What? |
| Alice: |
Oh I don't know, faces, names.. |
| Nick: |
Yeah, actually there was a name. It was written on one of these machines.
|
| Alice: |
Well, go on. |
| Nick: |
It was written on ones of these little canisters. Hanoi. |
| Alice: |
Hanoi? |
| Nick: |
It's in Vietnam. |
| Alice: |
Made in Vietnam, that's useful. |
| Nick: |
You still don't take this seriously do you? |
| Alice: |
Seriously! Have you any idea what I'm doing having you here
in this flat?! |
| Nick: |
Now wait.. |
| Alice: |
Look before you came along, I was handling the biggest civil suit my
company has ever had. I have worked for nine years to get where I am. But if
anyone so much as walked through that door, that would be it! I wouldn't just lose my job,
I'd be struck off. In fact I'd probably end up in jail! And you say I'm not taking this
seriously! |
| Nick: |
I didn't mean to say that. I meant, I don't know what I meant to
say. Look, I'm confused!, and I'm scared, okay? |
| Alice: |
You're not going to turn invisible, what ever happened it's over. |
| Nick: |
For now. |
| Alice: |
Forever. I'm not saying I don't believe you...but..maybe it was
a one off? Maybe they really were researching sun tans, and this whole thing was an
accident. |
| Nick: |
Oh no, they knew. Nothing about that place made sense, Ms Jefferies,
the doctor.. |
| Alice: |
Ms Jefferies? |
| Nick: |
That's what she called herself. |
| Alice: |
Right, well that's a name. Do you think you could describe her if we
went to the police? |
| Nick: |
What's the point? They'd never believe me. |
| Alice: |
Then what are you going to do? |
| Nick: |
I don't know! You're right about one thing though, I shouldn't be here. |
| Alice: |
Well, have you got anywhere else to go? |
| Nick: |
Me flat. |
| Alice: |
You can't go there. |
| Nick: |
Me brother. |
| Alice: |
Joe. Your thinking about the plane? |
| Nick: |
If he's still got it.. |
| Alice: |
The police won't let you get near it! |
| Nick: |
Well maybe I won't be so easy to see! (he starts to walk to the front door)
Look, thanks for the coffee, and the clothes. (we hear front door close) |
| Alice: |
(sarcastic) Good luck! |
|
|
|
[Scene: Night time in the city. Nick is walking around in the grey track suit Alice gave him. He has nothing on his feet and is hugging himself as he is cold. As he is walking he accidentally gets soaked by a car driving through a puddle. He enters a pub and finds a group of friends. He speaks to Jerry and Catherine. Jerry is about the same age as Nick with short brown hair. Catherine is pretty and possibly the same age, maybe slightly younger.]
|
|
|
| Nick: |
Jerry...Jerry. |
| Jerry: |
My god, Nick! |
| Nick: |
(sitting down) I'm looking for Joe. |
| Catherine: |
I haven't seen him. |
| Jerry: |
No, neither have I. |
| Nick: |
Have the police been round here yet? |
| Jerry: |
The airport, not here. My god Nick you've got a bloody nerve, you can't just walk in here |
| Catherine: |
He just did! Where d'you get the clothes? |
| Nick: |
A friend. |
| Catherine: |
Shouldn't you be wearing a suit with little arrows? |
| Nick: |
Nice to see you to Catherine! |
| Jerry: |
What the hell are you doing here Nick? Are you out of your mind? |
| Nick: |
They've probably bugged Joe's phone, I can't go to the airport, so I thought I'd try here. |
| Jerry: |
You wan'him to fly you out? No chance. |
| Catherine: |
They got his plane anyway. Impounded it. |
| Nick: |
But you can get a message to him? |
| Catherine: |
No.. |
|
|
|
[Steve now joins the gang around the pub table after buying a round of drinks from the
bar. He is of average height with very short cut hair. He appears to be a weenie bit egotistical!] |
|
|
| Steve: |
Here we go.. (upon seeing Nick) Christ al (says something which I can't make out) It's the bloody bird man of alcatraz. |
| Nick: |
Sh...Christ do you wanna megaphone? They can hear you down the curry house! |
| Steve: |
Whatta doing here? |
| Jerry: |
He's looking for Joe. |
| Steve: |
What? You need a flight out. Don't look at me, I gotta career! I've got a family. |
| Catherine: |
Well you could at least get him a drink. |
| Steve: |
Do you want one? |
| Nick: |
Is the pope a catholic? |
| Steve: |
You need a bit of cash, I can help that way, but to fly you out... |
| Nick: |
Steve...Steve Steve...just get me a drink. |
| Jerry: |
Here have mine. |
|
|
|
[As Nick goes to pick up Jerry's pint of beer we notice his hand has disappeared. Everyone jumps up when Nick accidentally knocks over the glass, and he leaves in a hurry.]
|
|
|
| Jerry: |
What happened to your hand? |
| Catherine: |
What is it? My god. |
| Nick: |
I gotta go! |
| Jerry: |
Nick..Nick, what the hell's going on? |
| Nick: |
I've gotta go...(leaves) |
|
|
|
[Scene: We see Nick go outside and slowly turn invisible. All we can then see is a track suit seemingly floating in the air. After a while, Nick takes off the track suit so we can't see him at all now. In the background the song "you head bone is connected to your..." is playing. Nick then arrives at his flat. There are 2 policemen standing outside the front door to the building.]
|
|
|
| Policeman 1: |
What was that? |
| Policeman 2: |
What? |
| Policeman 1: |
I thought I felt something. |
| Policeman 2: |
What? |
| Policeman 1: |
Yeah..nothing |
|
|
|
[Scene: Alice's flat. Alice is dressed in a bath robe after having a shower. She is sitting at her desk going through some papers when she hears the doorbell. It's Gordon.]
|
|
|
| Alice: |
Gordon! |
| Gordon: |
You asked for the Lawrence papers. |
| Alice: |
Yes, but I asked Jane to put them on a bike.. |
| Gordon: |
Well I was coming this way, so I thought I'd bring it myself. May I come in (walking passed Alice). |
| Alice: |
What'd'you want Gordon? |
| Gordon: |
Well some tea would be nice...? |
| Alice: |
I have to say this is something of a surprise. |
| Gordon: |
Well as I said I was coming this way, and I wanted to know why you
decided to take the day off. |
| Alice: |
I haven't. I can go over those papers just as easily here as I can in the office, and well I was waiting for someone to call. |
| Gordon: |
Not Nick Cameron I hope? You have seen today's headlines? (shows her a newspaper) |
| Alice: |
You don't think I had anything to do with that do you? |
| Gordon: |
You were there. |
| Alice: |
Yes but he'd already gone. Do you take milk? |
| Gordon: |
A little. Thank you (taking a mug of tea from Alice, she motions for him to sit down) |
| Alice: |
There is something you ought to know about Nick Cameron, since you mention him. |
| Gordon: |
Go on. |
| Alice: |
He told me this story in prison It was completely incredible, and I mean really fantastic, but there was one thing he said which rang a faint bell. Ever since I heard it I've been trying to work out what it was, and this morning I finally realised! |
| Gordon: |
What? |
| Alice: |
The Lawrence case. |
| Gordon: |
You're not going to tell me there's a connect between Cameron and Lawrence are you? You don't think that's a bit of a coincidence? |
| Alice: |
No. Maybe, I don't know. That's why I wanted to look at the Lawrence papers. (reaches out to get them, however Gordon's hand covers hers to stop her) |
| Gordon: |
Alice what's going on? Ever since I handed you this small time crook you've been obsessed with him. |
| Alice: |
I am not obsessed! |
| Gordon: |
(something!) on his case, visiting him in jail, waiting on his calls! What's got into you? fancy a bit of rough ay? |
| Alice: |
How dare you (stands up). |
| Gordon: |
Spare me the blushes. |
|
|
|
[Gordon's cup of tea then decides to tip itself all over Gordon, who promptly jumps up!]
|
|
|
| Gordon: |
What the.. |
| Alice: |
Gordon.. |
| Gordon: |
My suit! |
| Alice: |
Stay there I'll get you a cloth. (leaves) |
|
|
|
[As Gordon goes to sit down the chair seems to move out of the way and he falls on the floor.] |
|
|
| Alice: |
Gordon, what are you doing? |
| Gordon: |
The chair.. |
| Alice: |
Are you all right? |
| Gordon: |
Yes, No! I should never have come here. |
| Alice: |
True |
| Gordon: |
This has gone on long enough Alice. I'm taking you off the Lawrence case. You can forget about the whole thing! Right, I'll see you back at the office. (leaves) |
| Alice: |
Nick? Are you here Nick? Nick don't do this to me, you are here. All right Nick you win, I believe you! |
| Nick: |
Thank you. |
| Alice: |
(jumping!) Oh my god, oh my god you really are here....can I? |
| Nick: |
Yeah just be careful what you touch. |
| Alice: |
(as her hand makes contact with something that isn't there!) Nick... |
| Nick: |
(whispers) Yes. |
|
|
|
[Scene: Nick then proceeds to pick up Alice and twirl her around the room. In the background the song "I ain't go no body" is playing. We then switch to the Institute and their boardroom. Ms Jefferies is talking to the Head, Chivers and Lawrence are also sitting around the table.]
|
|
|
| Ms Jefferies: |
Everything you've ever dreamed of, you've done it! |
| The Head: |
Yes! The Guigees process works. Now, we've got to find out why it works. Why Cameron, we have to discover what makes him different. |
| Chivers: |
It was the radiation, it has to be. He was exposed to plutonium before he came here, and it must have done something to him. |
| The Head: |
Done what? |
| Chivers: |
Well we won't know that until we've examined him. |
| Ms Jefferies: |
And we can't do that until we find him. |
| Lawrence: |
And what chance do you think we have of that? Letting Cameron slip through your fingers isn't just bad for you, it's a disaster for all of us. When I started supplying you, you told me no one would find out. |
| Ms Jefferies: |
And they haven't. |
| Lawrence: |
What now? With this man on the lose, how long before he goes to the police, or the press? |
| Ms Jefferies: |
He won't. Nick Cameron can't go to the police! He's a wanted terrorist with a twenty-five year sentence to serve. |
| Lawrence: |
He might have friends. |
| Ms Jefferies: |
Not any more. He's alone. And he's invisible, permanently invisible. Think what must be going on in his head. He can't see his hands, he can't see his face. He must be half way to madness by now. It's as if he isn't there at all. |
| The Head: |
He'll come to us. |
| Ms Jefferies: |
He'll have to. He knows what we did to him. He'll have to come back. |
| Lawrence: |
To what? You're saying we just sit around on our backsides and wait for him to show up? |
| Ms Jefferies: |
That's exactly what we do Mr. Lawrence, we wait. Some how he'll find us. |
|
| The Head: |
And then he's ours! |
|
|
|
[Scene: Alice's Flat. She's talking to Nick about the connection with the Lawrence case, while he idly flips through a magazine on a table. Alice still appears to be talking to thin air!]
|
|
|
| Alice: |
You know when I said there might be a link between you and Lawrence I wasn't lying. |
| Nick: |
What links that? |
| Alice: |
Hanoi, the word you saw on the machine that made you invisible. You're certain it was Hanoi? |
| Nick: |
Yeah. |
| Alice: |
Listen. Edward Lawrence is chairman of a company called Solex Chemicals, they're the sole UK manufacturer of a chemical called Harnium. |
| Nick: |
Never heard of it. |
| Alice: |
Yeah, well last year there was a spillage. He polluted about three hundred acres of countryside. Now we're in the process of trying to sue him. But at the moment he's pretending he doesn't even make the stuff. |
| Nick: |
Sorry, I'm just not with you... |
| Alice: |
Oh my god.. |
| Nick: |
What? |
| Alice: |
Oh god, I don't... |
| Nick: |
What!? What?! |
| Alice: |
Your back. It's incredible |
| Nick: |
(a bit embarrassed) Oh, um,..um, I've left me clothes outside... |
| Alice: |
Oh, yes...(shielding her eyes) |
|
|
|
[Nick gets up and uses a newspaper to cover his...er.. assets! He then proceeds outside and retrieves his clothes. While there he sees an old lady who simply laughs at his misfortune! He then returns to Alice's flat, and Nick is now seen fully dressed!]
|
|
|
| Nick: |
So Solex claims they don't manufacture that, um what's that stuff? |
| Alice: |
Harnium. That's right, and one things for certain, nobody else does. It's here, I was right, look. (hands Nick a report to show him) |
| Nick: |
Harnium Nitrate. |
| Alice: |
Yep, or H A N O mark 1 (writes down Hano1) on a pad. |
| Nick: |
Hanoi! So this company Solex must be part of it. |
| Alice: |
Exactly. |
| Nick: |
They're the suppliers, supplying Guigees. |
| Alice: |
Yep! |
| Nick: |
So where's this company based? |
| Alice: |
Well they've got offices in the city, but Nick I can't just walk in there. |
| Nick: |
That's exactly my point Alice, you can't. But I can. |
|
|
|
[Scene: Forstater's office, he's on the phone with the local police. Gimson is also in the room.]
|
|
|
| Forstater: |
No, I don't think there can be any connection with the escape, but thank you all the same.....thank you very much. (puts phone down) That was the local police, they've been working very hard poor things. They found an abandoned car a few miles down the road. |
| Gimson: |
Who's car. |
| Forstater: |
It was actually a company car, register to Herbert and Wells Solicitors. |
| Gimson: |
Cameron's solicitor. |
| Forstater: |
Alice Grant! Exactly, now we erase... (picks up phone and starts dialling) |
|
