Ultraviolet - the US version

Ultraviolet has been bought by 20th Century Fox, who are producing a pilot of an American version of the hit UK series. Although an air date has yet to be set, a cast has been chosen.

Howard Gordon, the producer of the American version, is reported as saying that he's after a more "emotional" content, and wants to give the show a more "soap opera" feel. This gives the impression that the series will not be as moody or dark as the original UK version.

There are some major differences planned. SFX reported the following in their July 2000 issue:

"There will be some major differences between the two versions that go beyond mere series duration. Gordon refers to it as a love triangle "set against a war being fought in plain sight", something at clandestine nature of Ahearne's version. Another major departure will be the inclusion of an agent infiltrating the vampires./font>

"It's closer to Donnie Brasco and Wiseguy than Buffy or Angel. The undercover element is one way we're twisting it, dealing with someone who infiltrates the vampire organisation."

The new series will be episodic rather than a mini-series, and will thankfully follow an arc story line. Howard Gordon says, "One hundred episodes is kind of an arbitrary number, and whether something can stay fresh that long is not always an easy task."

Seeing as the USA have now seen the UK version of the show, it will be interesting to hear their reactions to the American version.
