Magazine and fanzine reviews for the 'In Grind We Crust' album
Ancient Ceremonies (December 2000)
I will not expand myself much on this release. What can be said about this cult band??? Not much!!! This Cd shows a part of history on the music scene, and it features material from '86 to '92 of this British band. The foundations of Hellbastard can be clearly seen as a blend of the punk and thrash metal "circuits".This is definitely a good testimony of pain, suffering, fun, but above all of an "embryonic" Metal era!! We will definitely see this band on these pages shortly.
Fitted Kitchens Of The Living Damned (November 2000)
Crustcore...the trend that sense forgot, grind for the smellier-than-thou.I know of a few impressionable folks who took to the crust scene like a dog-on-a-rope to its own vomit, and who were found out to have soaked their Conflict t-shirts in tea, buried them in the back garden for a week and smeared their army trousers in soya margarine for that authentic poverty-chic crustie look. Silly girls. Hi-fi studio wizardry? Aye,right...there'll be none of that nonsense here, thankyou. In case you aren't familiar with these English crustcore legends Hellbastard's sound is rough and ready and this is what gives it its edge.A fair reference point for some of Hellbastard's later 'more polished' work (such as on 'Natural Order') would be the likes of very early Sepultura which should give you an idea of the raw dynamics on offer here.Lyrically you could point to the nihilism of early Doom or Deviated Instinct and their anarcho-punk ilk. There are several cuts from the classic 'Heading for Internal Darkness' album, making for an essential retrospective.
A legend in their own rights - Hellbastard - the band responsible for the creation of "grind" and "crust" have been gone from our lives for ages now.Members of the band have gone on to form other bands including Nero Circus, who've been featured in these very pages but it is the original band we are now looking at.'In Grind' is a 16 track compilation of the bands best moments. The songs span a 12 year career and include such delights as 'Death Camp','Heading For Internal Darkness' and 'Nazis Killed'.At the time they were classics in the underground scene. Here's to Hellbastard...a legend in their own rights!
