WELWYN GARDEN CITY |
| Welwyn
Garden City - a lifeless town.At night the streets are deserted and you
can walk miles without passing a single soul, yet the place is full of houses. Is
anyone inside? Of course they are but Welwyn Garden City has always had
this soulless quality.Life might be found at parties and similar events
but the town itself has no character. There are no nightclubs or regular
gigs here.An affluent deadzone. How apt that this is the town which inspired
the desolation and alienation so apparent in the songs of Mark Astronaut.
Welwyn Garden City was actually a happening place in the anarcho punk years (1981-83) and among those who played here were Crass,Flux Of Pink Indians (twice), Subhumans,The Mob,Annie Anxiety,Youth In Asia,Rudimentary Peni,Dirt,Omega Tribe,Zounds, and local punk bands like Nightmare. The Astronauts played at some of these gigs as a full band or duo of Mark Astronaut and Bob Green.Local fanzines included Re@ction,For My Country and Zero. Recently(2005-2006)life has returned after a long absence with both national and local bands including The Astronauts and Otters playing regular gigs.Perhaps those with a passion for music, excitement and life can make things happen even in the most contented of places.
