Best known in the west as a form of gentle exercise consisting of body postures and breathing techniques, yoga is in fact a complete system of mental and physical training, originally developed as preparation for spiritual development. It has been practised for thousands of years in India, and now has become popular around the world. In the West it is valued more for its physical than spiritual benefits, such as its ability to increase suppleness and vitality, and to relieve stress. Yoga has now been incorporated into a number of Western health regimes. Yoga can be split in five main roads, however they all point to the same goal which is Spiritual Development. It is very important that you understand the need to familiarise yourself with the principles of the various branches, but at the same time giving preference to those that interest you more. Whatever road you choose, always
