Facts about Penniwells
Welcome to the third issue of the newsletter bringing you all the latest news regarding the planned walk from Hayes to the West Country in May.
FOOT AND
MOUTH
As everyone is aware we are now in the midst of
a particularly vicious outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease. New cases
are being reported every day with new restrictions being imposed.
Unfortunately the latest restrictions will affect the walk and may lead
to the walk being postponed until the end of May or even the beginning
of September. Already long stretches of the proposed route are out
of bounds. A firm decision on whether to postpone the walk will be
made on 10th April 2001. On my visit to the West Country last weekend
I was concerned to find almost all local footpaths out of bounds.
Even Cheddar Gorge is closed to pedestrians, although ironically motor
vehicles are still allowed up the Gorge.
Fortunately Penniwells has not had to close although everyone visiting the centre now has to go through a foot wash. Providing the situation has not changed by the weekend I hope to visit again.
COMMITTEE
Because of the number of tasks still to be tackled
before the walk can take place we have begun to form a committee.
Committee Members so far
| Keith Adams | Glenda Greenfield |
| Keith Matthews | Trevor Trendell-Smith |
| Stephen Wharton |
We hope to recruit one more member on to the committee. It would be nice if we could encourage someone with a connection with Penniwells.
WEB SITE
My cousin Adam Taussik has kindly built a Web Site
for The Walk 2K01. We will keep this web
site regularly updated with all the latest news, views etc regarding The
Walk 2K01.

confusion a special Treasurers bank account has been set up for The Walk
2k01. In accordance with normal procedures the account requires two
signatures.

CAN AND CAN`T DOS
Christine Goodall from the Chief Executive's office
is looking into what fund raising activities can and can’t be done in connection
with The Walk 2K01.
IN HOUSE
We hope to have an article published in the March
edition of IN HOUSE. Hopefully this will attract attention from other
departments with L.B.H.
T-SHIRT COMPETITION
We have launched a competition for the riders and
helpers from Penniwells to design a T-Shirt which can be worn by those
taking part and associated with the walk to wear. The winning designer
will receive a ten pound book token. All designs will be featured
on the web site.
MEETING POINT
The landlord of the Blue Anchor, Printing House
Lane has given permission to use his car park as a meeting / start
point for the walk. A full schedule will be printed next month
of each days starting time and place.
HEALTH MATTERS
I have received a letter from Dr Simon Dubrey, Consultant
Cardiologist, giving his approval for me to take part in the walk and wishing
me all the best (I did not quite have the nerve to ask him to sponsor me).
“I like riding Nicky because he doesn’t think of me as disabled”.
This simple statement by a young girl called Jane is what first drew my attention to Penniwells, just before Christmas. Since then I decided to find out more and think what I could do to help. So "The Walk 2K01" was conceived.
Saturday 24th February I made my first visit to Penniwells. The Riding centre is situated about a mile from Elstree station in an almost rural setting. It is easy to forget you are still within the Greater London Area. It’s less than half an hour by train from central London.
LETTER
The following is a letter received by The
Walk 2k01 from one of the parents of one of the riders.
Dear Mr.WhartonPlease find enclosed my daughter Rachel`s design for a T-Shirt for your sponsored walk for Penniwells R.D.A. I know from personal experience how much Penniwells offers it’s riders – my own daughter has learning disabilities, but whatever their disability all riders gain enormous enjoyment and a sense of achievement from their regular visits to the stables
Good luck for your effort and many thanks for what you are doing.
