'But that's just silly...'

This page is here because I find the world silly. Not silly -'BIZZARRE', but just plain silly. (Though parts of the world are pretty bizzarre, and there may be another page about them. This page is for those instances in life when you want to do some reasonable, logical sensible thing - and the wolrld wont let you. It is also to highlight other people who try to do something sensible, but fail to.

NB - this background is delibrately ironic.

1.  Stupid

"To illustrate this, we shall look at different German idiomatic expressions, conventionalized as well as
non-conventionalized ones, which refer to the same schematic terget concept: "stupidity". This common target structure
can be characterzed schematically as a negatively valued norm deviance in the domain of intellectual capacities and the mind. (my italics)

Generalized Metonymy: The conceptualization of stupidity in German idiomatic expressions

Can you get much more stupid?

2. Spit

'The symbolic meanings of saliva developing from its physical, physiological functions. The key role of the saliva lies in reception, thus it promotes the adaptation of the world beyond us. Through water, saliva can also be converted into a carrier of mental contents, becoming the means of creation and self- expression. Idioms like "he is the spitting image of his father" identify spitting with Creation. Spitting may be the symbol of occupation, the extension of the self-bounds. "Spit-spit, this is mine" the small child says, grabbing a toy. Spitting is also the gesture of rejection, aggression, and humiliation. Saliva appears as harmful, an accessory of monsters which embody negative archetypes. In films like  The Fly  and  Alien, saliva is the symbol of the appetite, of a desire for devastation. Only the flame-thrower with a drying action is effective against monsters saturated with fluids. That is the way saliva itself is destroyed. And the dehydration means emotional impoverishment in the sense of the soul.'

3. Safeways

Safeways does many silly things, and this section will grow long. Some are very silly, but some just irked me as I shopped.

4. Computer labs

For some reason the computer labs at Bangor close at 10 o'clock at night. This is very anoying, and serves no seeable purpose.

5. The Brain

Notes on a Talk Entitled ``Is the Brain Critical?'' by Per Bak, 18 March 1997 at the Santa Fe Institute

These notes discuss the lecture in detail, and are very silly (well the lecture was silly, wasn't it?)

6. Lyrical Shmyrical!

Some song lyrics are just really, really silly. Such as...

7. Radio 2.

Radio 2 has an odd habit, when some DJ (sorry, presenter) is away. Another presenter is usually taken out of their slot, and a new presenter is put in the empty slot. This means that for two weeks we have Sarah Kennedy in for Terry Wogan, Alex Lester taking over from Sarah Kennedy, and Mo Dutta (who has no regular slot) in for Alex Lester. This seems very silly: why not just put in Mo Dutta for Terry Wogan?

On a Politically Correct note (PC = Pretentious Crap), Radio 2 has very few female presenters, and they are usually on in the middle of the night, or the depths of Sunday afternoon.
