Tips

This page has tips you could use to prevent problems occuring or on dealing with them when they do.

If you have any useful tips on how to deal with bga's or bgc's that you'd like to share either email me or put them on the forum. Thanks.

I am not a Doctor so please DO NOT use this page or website as a substitute for a good Doctor. Please don't stay with a Doctor whom you do not trust or think is handling your situation badly, you only get one life. There are plenty of great Doctors to change to.

Water

Drink 8 glasses of water a day (or more if you are larger than "average") so that your body is healthy and to prevent secretions thickening up. A website with good information on health and water is

There is a link to calculate how much water you need for your particular body on the above page.

Sleep

Get plenty of sleep at night for your body to repair itself. There is a saying that the hours before midnight do you more good than the hours after midnight sleepwise. A good article on this is at ivillage.

Vitamins

In Britain (I don't know about the US) it is recommended by the Government that we eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day for nutritional health of our bodies. The best place to get vitamins is food but vitamin supplements are an ok substitute if you can't stomach healthy things (There is a debate on whether vitamins do more harm than good but nothing conclusive has come out so far and I feel better on them).

Sugar

I have seen very tentative suggestions online that Bartholins problems could be an early sign of diabetes or impending diabetes, though nothing was certain on this matter (and it never said why either - not sure where I read this but if I find out I'll put the link here or if you know email me please). For good health generally low-sugar diets are better so it won't hurt to reduce your intake.

Toilet Matters

Always wipe backwards towards your back after pooing to prevent spread of bacteria to your feminine areas. If you have had an abscess or cyst which has popped or if you have had surgery there it can be painful to urinate (stings when it gets in the wound) so use a clean damp cloth on the area to the side where the wound is whilst you go to prevent it happening.

Hygeine

General good hygeine helps. Wear clean underwear everday. I think a quick dip in salt water at midday, if you can, (even just a shallow bath just to cover the area) helps prevent cysts/abscesses from occuring. Antiseptic washes might be good also but be careful you aren't allergic first. I prefer salt as it is more natural and less likely to cause irritation to the delicate area (my opinion).

Clothing

Wear loose clothing on your lower half, especially underwear. Some doctors say that wearing thongs or tight clothing can make the chance of getting an abscess/cyst increase slightly. This is especially important if you are travelling by plane or are going to be confined for a time to sitting still without being able to move much.

Lubrication

A Bartholin abscess sufferer named Cathy emailed me this very helpful tip. If you are finding it painful to walk or move with an abscess use some lubricant (KY jelly, vaseline etc) so that the area does not rub as much.
