Overview
I Dj using a computer which actually allows me more flexibility
than CD's or MD's because I can carry much more music and as a
result cater for a wider variety of audience. It also makes searching
for songs a lot easier and is actually more reliable than separate
CD players. I can also play CD's through the computer and mix
them just as I would mix any other track.
Hardware
I use a Dell Dimension 4100 PC because it's well built and highly
specified. I run a single 1Ghz Pentium 3 with 256Mb or Ram. Two
ATA hard drives of 20G and 40G and 2 CD players that double as
a CD-RW and DVD player between them. I run two soundcards, the
main one used to output to a PA system is a SB Live! 4 channel,
while I can cue tracks through either the rear channels of the
main soundcard or use the second, separate card.
Software
I use Ots Juke Dj software which runs in windows 2000. It has
the benefit of being able to mix virtually any track into virtually
any other professionally. It also has an excellent audio pipeline
that to emulate with hardware would cost several thousand pounds.
For full documentation on this excellent piece of software see
the Ots Juke website.
The large size of my hard drive allows me to carry a large quantity
of music easily. At present there is approximately 20G of broadcast
quality music which equates to approximately 4000 songs. These
are mainly in the Rock, Pop and Cheese genre's but I also carry
some Rap, Hip Hop, Jazz, Classical and a few Samples/ Comedy tracks.
None of these songs have been downloaded from the internet illegaly
(ie I do not use napster/morpehus). Any tracks that have been
downloaded are usualy demo's or free tracks from artists websites.
