2    Pronunciation

2.1       Gilo Alphabet Pronunciation

Three of the normal Roman alphabet letters are given their own consonant sounds.  'c' is pronounced 'ch' (as in cheddar) and 'x' is pronounced 'sh' (as in shed).  The ‘th’ sound in English and other languages is not used in Gilo but the letter ‘q’ is reserved for that sound where it is needed in proper names etc which may be used in Gilo.  Two new vowels are added to the Roman alphabet.  The first is ã pronounced as in far and is symbol 0227 (using number lock and Alt key).  The capital à is symbol 0195.  The second is ø pronounced as in fort and is symbol 0248.  The capital Ø is symbol 0216.

This vowel chart is copied from the International Phonetic Alphabet

Five of the Gilo vowels are also found in Spanish and Japanese:

i, e, ã, ø, u

The remaining two, a & o are existing vowels found in English Received Pronunciation.

The 7 vowels chosen give a wider vocabulary range than just using 5 vowels.  The main omission from English is the 'short u' found in cut & cup, which would be in the position shown by *.

Gilo has 7 vowels and I have listed some examples of pronunciation below.  Vowel pronunciations in English vary enormously due to different accents.  I have tried to choose examples that are pronounced the same way, regardless of accent but this is difficult!

The vowel names are the same as their pronunciations.

a

as in:  fat, cat, bat, sat, clarify, classical, Patrick

e

as in:  bed, fed, get, bet, met, better

i

as in:  feet, meet, beat, sheep, cheap, Fiji

o

as in:  modify, occupy, Sharon,

The North American accent tends more towards the 'ã' sound here, so some care is needed. (Try it with a British accent!)

u

as in:  tool, fool, pool, cool, who, root

ã

as in:  car, far, bar, star, mark

ø

as in:  order, fort, cord, porter, broad,
