Eastside A.B.C in need of cash.

As you can see from the photograph below the Eastside A.B.C gym is falling apart.  We require £500,000 to rebuild our gym to a standard that will allow us to continue to produce amateur boxing champions of the future.

So far we have been able to secure a grant for £250,000; the only problem is that to be able to receive the money we need to raise the same amount ourselves.   The club has always been  helped out by local businesses, boxers family and friends, but no matter how many sponsored fights, skips, or runs we do, it is always the same people who support us and to be perfectly honest there is no way we could raise £250,000 in this manner before the gym collapses around us.

If you have any ideas on how we could fundraise / gather this money or you would be interested in sponsoring the gym or even making a charitable donation to the club (Registered Charity Number XR98998) please contact us.

Hopefully we can raise this money to carry on making a difference in the lives of young people and producing some of the finest amateur boxers around.

Willie Thompson racked up his 2nd consecutive win of his pro career at the Point Dublin on 25th august 2007.  Willie defeated Athur Jashkul 39 - 37 (over 4 x 3 min rounds).  Hopefully this is the start of a promising career for him. Willie Thompson 2-0-0.

Belshaw's Career in Jeopardy.

horizontal rule

Ulster boxer Scott Belshaw's career has been put in jeopardy after an horrific car crash.

The unbeaten heavyweight was involved in the accident in the early hours of yesterday morning when his car, an Audi, collided with a lorry.

Belshaw was rushed to hospitial with a broken left kneecap as well as four broken ribs, and released last night.

Belshaw had been on course for a Christmas showdown with fellow unbeaten heavyweight Martin Rogan but now there are fears over his future.

Belshaw, 22 tomorrow, enjoyed his latest victory last weekend and was expecting to be back in the ring next month.

His coach Alan Wilton said: "It's devastating for Scott because everything was going so well for him. Having heard what happened I'm just glad that he is alive. He was unconcious when the got him out of the car."

"When something like this happens boxxing comes second and I just hope he gets over it as soon as possible. He's on Morphone for the pain. The ribs will heal, I have no worries about that but the kneecap is a big concern because it could leave a weakness. It's such a shame because the fight with rogie was going to be great. Hopefully it will happen in the future."

From personal experience ribs will heal, (now Scott knows what it feels like lol). As Alio has said above the kneecap could prove to be a major issue.

Good Luck and Good Health to Scott and hope he recovers quickly, he will be missed in the gym even if he is off for a short period.

Willie Thompson.

Holiday Inn belfast 30th June 2007

Willie Thompson W PTS 4 Paul Royston 4 rnds Light-Middleweight

For Willie Thompson's Pro debut he put on an excelent show. Although he didnt get the KO he was looking for it was not for want of trying, infact that was most probably his biggest downfall; looking for the KO.

The 4th round of this fight had to be the most exciting and just proved that Thompson had plenty left in the tank if the fight had of went further.

Thompson worked hard but seemed a little tense at times and a bit hesitant at points. For a first Pro fight Thompon showed great potential, and a great sports mans attitude. Both fighters were very courious throughout the fight.

If/When Thompson starts to receive more press coverage I think he might just win the award for scariest facial expresions in the ring, He has the most intimidating set of eyes I have ever seen in a ring.

Well done Willie Thompson

Belshaw Strikes Again.

Holiday Inn, Belfast, Northern Ireland 30th June 2007

Scott Belshaw W KO 1 Chris Woollas Heavyweight

This time is was 2 very hard body shots that floored the journeyman fighter. In this outting Scott showed very good use of his jab and worked very well in doubling it up to work a way into the heavier and more experienced fighter. another wi under Scotts belt no takes his record to a 6-0 score line.

Now all the fans are talking aout a Belshaw vs Rogan show down for the N.Ireland and Irish belts. This would be a superb fight for the fans and fingers crossed I can be organised for a bigger venue as for the 1st time in the last 5 events at the Holiday Inn Belfast there was a sell out crowd.

Belfast boys Glove Up

by Tomas Rohan
Oct 26th 2006
Pro boxing returns to the Andersonstown Leisure Centre in Belfast tomorrow night (Thursday, October 26th) when Denis Hobson Snr. and Big Bash Promotions host a six fight card.

Sharing top billing are local duo Kevin O' Hara and Martin Rogan with undercard support coming from three of their stable mates at John Breen's gym and Belfast light welter James Gorman.

The card has something of a Northern Ireland versus Latvia feel to it with three of the local fighters up against Latvian opposition. It's Hungarian opposition for O' Hara though as he takes on Csaba Ladanyi over 6 rounds at super featherweight.

It's been a frustrating year for “Sweet Pea” who had hoped to have his hands on a Lonsdale belt by now. Instead he's had to settle for a pair of marking time points wins following a disappointing Celtic title defeat to Willie Limond in Glasgow. The 25-year-old believes he's better than that defeat suggested and is hopeful that a win tomorrow night can put him back in line for another title shot.

He certainly shouldn't have any problems with Ladanyi a 31-year-old with a record of 9 wins and 12 losses. O' Hara is targeting a shot at London prospect Kevin Mitchell should he come through his vacant Commonwealth title scrap with George Ashie later this month.

Mitchell needed less than a round to dispose of Ladanyi when they met in 2003 in what was only Mitchell's second fight. On that statistic alone O' Hara is surely going to have to stop the Hungarian if he wants to press his claims for a shot Mitchell.

Sharing the limelight with O' Hara is Martin “The Entertainer” Rogan the local heavyweight who has racked up 5 straight wins since making his pro bow almost two years ago. Trainer John Breen is hopeful that linking up with new manager/promoter Denis Hobson Snr. will make “Rogie” a far more active fighter.

Breen feels that Rogan is good enough to challenge for Scott Gammer's British title in 2007 so a win against Jevgenijs Stamburskis is a must.

Given the Latvian's record of 1 win from 5 fights it should certainly not prove beyond Rogan who received words of advice from former heavyweight champ Tim Witherspoon when he was in Belfast last week.

Another man looking to push towards a British title shot on the card is middleweight Jason McKay. Like Rogan the 29-yer-old McKay should have little or no trouble negotiating his six rounder with Sandris Tomson who has an identical record to his countryman Stamburskis.

Lurgan's Stephen Haughain also faces Latvian opposition. He tackles Denis Alekseev in a light welterweight bout. 29-year-old Alexseev has been in with current British champion Lenny Daws and decent Finnish fighter Juho Tolppola so he should prove a decent yardstick of Haughian's progress in the pro ranks.

The two other local fighters on the card are up against opposition from a little closer to home. Light welterweight Gorman features against Essex fighter, Tom Glover while Belfast bantam Colin Moffett clashes with new pro Robert Bunford.

Bell tolls for Webb in 10 secs

By David Kelly

08 October 2006

Scott Belshaw blasted his way to one of the fastest knockouts in British ring history last night.

In what proved to be sensational debut for the 6ft 7' heavyweight, Belshaw knocked out fellow debutant Lee Webb in just 10 seconds at the Holiday Inn.

Amid the jubilation there was also concern for Webb, whose 17st 10lb frame hit the canvas with a sickening thud and required oxygen from the paramedics before he got to his feet after around five tense minutes.

It was only Belshaw's second punch of his professional - a straight left followed by another sent Webb crashing to the ground.

The 21-year-old Lisburn man jumped in delight as the hall erupted and admitted that he was "shocked" by the early victory.

"I can hardly believe it. To be honest I thought he was going to get up after the punch. I didn't think that I hit him that hard," said Belshaw.

"This was just a dream debut for me and to have my family here was so special, it brought a tear to my eye.

"It's just fantastic for me. I was just getting loosened up and then he went down. I've been having some great sparring in London and it all paid off.

"Now I just want to get back in the ring as soon as possible. A busy fighter is a successful fighter."

No doubt manager Frank Maloney will seek to have Belshaw out again as soon as possible after such an eye-catching start to the Lisburn man's career.

In the main event, Martin Rogan moved to the brink of the top ten in the British heavyweight ratings with a points victory over Paul King.

King, ranked around 12, was comprehensively outpointed 60-55.

Rogan may have marked up under his left eye, partly due to King's left lead but from the second round onwards the Belfast man dominated.

At times Rogan was finding it very hard to catch the taller, awkward Sheffield fighter, with clean blows but he maintained a high workrate which proved decisive.

In the third round Rogan started to find the range and a short left hook forced King to cover up.

As the round came to a close Rogan got through with a right to the body and another short left to the head.

King was having sporadic success with his left hand, tagging Rogan as he drove forward while at one point in the fourth round the Belfast man screamed in a demand for his opponent to stand and trade.

King started to tire in the fifth and sixth rounds and Rogan came up with some of his best work, tracking him down and firing home his hooks.

Rogan will return to the ring in three weeks time on October 26 at the Andersonstown Leisure Centre.

Light-welterweight James Gorman picked up a much needed victory with a 59-56 decision over Welshman Steve Anning's.

Gorman lost the first two rounds as Anning's early assaults got through but then the east Belfast man started to find his rhythm and he was always in command from the third onwards as his opponent started to fade.

But there was disappointment for another man from the east as bantamweight Colin Moffatt lost on points to Matt Edmonds.

Welshman Edmonds deservedly picked up a 40-37 decision.
