Dear Jim, My wife keeps on about putting a new front door on the house but I don't know where to start. It would win me lots of brownie points with her indoors but I'm worried something will go wrong. Can you help?
There's no need to worry with a job like this! Simply hammer the old frame out of the brickwork with the trusty club hammer and go and buy a replacement. The new frame is simply hammered back in with a 2lb ball pein hammer. Then hammer in half a dozen cut nails to secure it in place. I find a 1lb claw hammer ideal for this. When it comes to hanging the new door in the frame, simply drive the screws home with a small hammer. See my guide on hammer selection.
Dear Jim, Can you suggest which type of hammer I should use for banging down floorboards?
You can use a normal claw hammer for this, but watch out for the 'Half Crowns' in the boarding. Try to keep them uniform.
Dear Jim, My car sometimes wont start in the morning. Can this be fixed?
It sounds like the starter motor is jamming. Often a clout on the starter motor housing with the club hammer will free this up and you will be on your way in no time!
Dear Jim, What size screwdriver should I buy for general work around the home? Also should I buy slotted or Pozidrive?
Jim answers (whoops!
I forgot to alter this one!)
Most screws can be hammered home without the need to bother with a screwdriver. You can just give the screws the last half turn just to finish the job if the need arises. I specialise in hammer craft so am reluctant to advise on screwdrivers
The 14lb Sledge hammer has not been included as it is considered by Jim to be a specialist instrument and is beyond the scope of this article
