The new look Calmore 3rd’s outfit looked strong before there first game of a
new campaign hosting relegated Exbury. The Home side won the toss and decided to
bowl on a green looking surface at the King George V playing field. New captain
Paul Galbraith held himself back with a new ball in swinging conditions and
threw the ball to Provins and Croft. A tidy spell saw the two openers take a
wicket each for little runs and setting up the game for Calmore. Calmore were
exceptional in the field and good catches from Andy Bradshaw at cover and Dan
Croft at Gully as well as 2 bowled wickets saw Martin Donovan pick up where he
left off with 4 wickets to his name. Galbraith then brought himself on after an
unfortunate spell from Kinchington and took 2/18. Provins then came back on and
took 2 more wickets to rap up the tail. Calmore’s tight bowling and great
fielding left Exbury defending 162.
Calmore’s new opening pair of Galbraith and Perry didn’t fire and left the
3rd’s 0/2 off 2 overs. However, this brought Dave Rose and Sean Kitcher to the
crease and a wonderful combination of stroke play and big hitting restored the
innings for Calmore. A dubious LBW saw Kitcher fall on 24 when looking good to
go on. Andy Bradshaw then came to the crease and his partnership with Dave Rose
put Calmore in a winning position. Bradshaw fell in the 20’s but had done his
job. Dave Rose was still going strong and will feel gutted to have picked out
the fielder and long on to fall just 11 short of a fantastic 100, but Rose’s
89 had but the game beyond Exbury and in Calmore’s favor. The experienced
Partnership of Bowring and Donovan hit the winning runs for Calmore and brought
home the perfect start for Calmore winning by 6 wickets on Day 1 of the season.
Calmore’s Man of the Match: Dave Rose – a fantastic 89 put the game in Calmore's
favor following a worrying start.
