The main trees are oak ash and field maple, with a shrub layer which includes hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly, crab apple, dogwood, guelder rose, wayfaring tree, dog rose, bramble and clematis. The woods show many of the features of ancient woodland, and part of the site includes an overgrown hedge, which is marked on a map of the 1790's and which may be much older, as it contains a large number of species, which is a feature of ancient hedges.

The Reserve is notable for the profusion of Goldilocks buttercups in the spring, which are featured in the pictures below.

A picture of the wood in spring, showing the goldilocks buttercups, and a close up of the buttercups. Notice that the foliage is more feathery than that of the other buttercups and some of the plants have missing petals, which is a feature of goldilocks buttercups

Nature Walks  are held on the first Sunday of each month at 10.30 am We meet at the notice board opposite the Cwmtalwg Pub, Severn Avenue Barry.

At the nature walk on 3 September 06 we saw this emperor dragonfly resting on the ground. It was motionless and so I touched it to see if it was alive. It buzzed slightly but did not fly so I took a couple of photographs and after this the dragonfly took off. It was a breezy day and I expect it became too cold to fly and a couple of flashes from the camera were enough to warm it up.
