what are koi ?
Koi carp or Nishikigoi were introduced into Japan by the Chinese as food fish. But
after thousands of years of selective breeding the common carp have now become
of grate value. Available in a selection of colours and varieties. For a full
list of Koi types and varieties check out my Koi descriptions page. Generally
quality is determined by over all shape to size, colour and more over even
patterns and distinctive markings. Koi are still however common carp and behave
very much like there ancestors requiring well oxygenated water, good
circulation and filtration, adequate nutrition and plenty of room as they will
grow substantially in a short while 6 to 8 inches in there first year if given
food and space and up to 2 foot fish in 5 years or less .
Koi breed in schools typically, but as few as three will cluster as long as
both sexes are present and healthy. Generally in the early to late spring
depending on weather and water changes which usually trigger spawning. The Koi
will eat their eggs and do so even while spawning plants or spawning mats may
be helpful if any quantity of fry are to be raised. Spawning mats may be
removed and the young hatched out away from the breeders in separate quarters
.breeding can be very stressful for your Koi coursing rips in fins damage to
scales and even death! So a lot of Koi keepers prefer to keep just one sex in
there ponds at any given time.
Once settled in to your pond, Koi are very intelligent and if happy with there
new pond will soon start to follow you for food.
